WOMEN'S HORMONES

I had the incredible opportunity to speak at Calvary Church's MomCo event last
Thursday, and I am just in awe of God's faithfulness and kindness. My husband was in France the whole week for an urgent, last-minute business trip, which the devil can use to thwart God's good plan. Thankfully, the prayers from my sisters in Christ and mentors before the talk gave me overwhelming peace. I was bursting with joy sharing my passion for women's health and wellness with a room full of women of all ages! What a gift!
I'll share a few takeaways from the talk about women's hormones and a Christian perspective:
1. In Genesis 2:18-23, God has Adam name all of the wild animals and birds of the sky, exposing the fact that each animal and bird had a counterpart, or companion, and Adam did not. God, in His kindness, shows Adam his need for a helper before giving him one: a woman.
2. God created women to have a cycle, with changing hormones throughout the cycle that work in tandem in order to procreate. But God is more fascinating than that: women's hormones play a larger part in overall health and wellness than just reproduction. Estrogen and progesterone are hormones that play critical roles in brain, heart, and bone health.
3. Ever wonder why you might feel more sensitive than another woman during the same phase of your cycle? Your brain's receptors are likely more sensitive to hormone fluctuations throughout the cycle. There is nothing wrong with you - you just need to know how to support the particularly unique body that God specifically designed for you. Each body, and therefore each cycle, is different.

BIBLE & BLOOD SUGAR
Did you know God cares about blood sugar management?! Although the Bible may not state it in those exact words, God shares His heart on this topic in 1 Kings 19:3-9. The prophet Elijah has just had prophets of Baal slaughtered after God appeared in fire to consume a bull sacrifice (1 Kings 18:38-40). Ahab (wicked king of Israel) learns about what the prophet Elijah has done and informs Jezebel (his evil wife). She sends a messenger to Elijah to tell him she's coming to kill him.
Elijah is running for a whole day (wowzers) and falls down to sleep but prays to God saying, “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors." (1 Kings 19:4b). Perhaps you have had this experience before.
"God, I can't stay calm with my kids anymore, I am so overstimulated!"
"God, fix my husband! He is ruining our marriage!"
"God, I am so hopeless for anything to go well."
God's next move with Elijah is powerful. He does not tell Elijah to practice self-control or to increase his patience. He simply sends an angel to Elijah to tell him to "Get up and eat.” (1 Kings 19:5b). God provided for Elijah's physical need for food. His blood sugar was low: he hadn't eaten and had been running for his life all day. Talk about a cortisol spike! When our bodies are in a low energy state, our brain cannot perform higher level functions such as patience or clear thinking. This is where stewarding your body well through blood sugar management can help prevent those spikes and dips and ultimately, your mood, motivation, and mental clarity. God knows we have limits, and He invites us to lean on Him when we reach them.
